Assistant Principal/Science Teacher |
| SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under direction, serves as assistant instructional leader and assistant administrative officer of a Montessori charter elementary and middle school, performing related work as required for 190 work days contracted over the school fiscal year.
DISTINGUISING CHARACTERISITICS
This position offers the roles of approximately half-time assistant principal and Montessori half time Nevada licensed, highly qualified science teacher under NCLB criteria.
EXEMPLARY RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

Uses collaborative strategic planning to help identify and accomplish the HDMS mission, goals and objectives; recruits, selects, assigns, and organizes staff in such a way as to assure the greatest potential for the accomplishment of High Desert Montessori School’s mission; facilitates the identification, training, and monitoring of the staff to insure effective support in accomplishing the strategic plan of the WCSD; attracts volunteers and provides them effective training and meaningful assignments; provides a safe, orderly climate for learning; assists in the operation and maintenance of the physical plant.
Applies understanding of the school budget and its specific implications for the school; involves staff and representative members of the community in the development of school budget priorities, based upon the mission and strategic plan of HDMS and its Board of Directors.
Is aware of and subject to appropriate laws of the State of Nevada, the regulations of the Nevada Department of Education, Washoe County School District and the policies set forth by High Desert Montessori School.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
• Testing Coordination and acts as site standards officer.
• LEA: Flowchart for implementation, management and tracking of, WCSD process for SPED; i.e, 504’s, attending trainings, coordinating and monitoring school counselors, accountabilities in monitoring, reporting abnormalities.
• Teaching duties as assigned; curriculum coordination (i.e., 08-09 Science Coordinator)
• Montessori professional for Middle School: manage prepared environment, teacher training, acquisition, care and instruction with Montessori materials.
• Attendance and academic warnings and implementation of consequences.
• Manage cases of sex and child abuse or neglect cases with Washoe County Social Services and WCSD
• Liaison with the Nurse for screenings: hearing, vision, scoliosis, health checks, and immunizations, and any that shall be added by regulatory agencies
• Attends monthly Board meetings, and as required, other public meetings as support staff.
• Acts as supervisor to teaching settings and principal’s assistant to teaching staff for teacher evaluation, curriculum implementation, behavior management, and testing requirements.
• Monitors and assists with school technology policies.
• Contributes to and assists the principal and staff with proactively maintaining the HDMS calendar.

Requirements:
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATES and EXPERIENCE
Credentials and Experience:
Current State of Nevada School Administrator license without provisions is necessary for commencement of a contract at this level of administrator, and:
• AMI or AMS certification in Montessori education,
• A minimum of five (5) years teaching experience,
• Hold current status of NCLB Highly Qualified, Nevada licensed science teacher without provisions.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Nevada drivers’ license with a clean driving record
• Ability to have a clear FBI background and fingerprint check.
Knowledge of:
Modern instructional techniques and curricular concepts, especially as they are related to the elementary and middle school; Nevada state standards; the vertical structure of the course of study and understand the importance of articulation in these areas; primary, lower elementary, upper elementary, early adolescent and adolescent youth; the Montessori philosophy of education; principles of charter school goals and practices of school administration, including school finances, teaching methods and techniques, evaluations, and program development, accountability for applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations, ordinances and policies; familiar with NWEA, CRT and Iowa Test of Educational Development testing procedures and regulations; human resources development; school law, progressive discipline; conflict resolution; public relations; principles of effective management, staff supervision and administration; writing, implementation and compliance reporting for grants. Financial Analyst |
| Financial Analyst
Financial Analyst is responsible for following the appropriate financial protocols and records of HDMS. There are daily, weekly, monthly, and annual responsibilities:
ANNUAL DUTIES:
FISCAL AUDIT: The Interim Financial Analyst shall facilitate the Annual Audit that is conducted by certified CPA. This report must be submitted to the Washoe County School District and to the Department of Education no later than November 1st. The Fiscal Year ends on June 30th. Audit should be conducted no later than September 15th for submittal to the HDMS Board of Directors in the month of October.
INVENTORY: The Interim Financial Analyst shall maintain accurate inventory of the assets of HDMS. Teachers must be presented inventory lists each April for them to verify and/or amend assets located in their classroom. All new purchases should be included in the classroom inventories as they are acquired.
PRO-FORMA: Beginning in January, the Interim Financial Analyst shall collaborate with the Principal/Director to create a pro-forma for the upcoming school year based upon projected enrollment and staffing considerations. This should include all new information about overhead costs and adjustments with full explanation.
ANNUAL BUDGET: Based upon input concerning the pro-forma and discussions with Administrator, the Interim Financial Analyst shall prepare annual budget documents for the HDMS Board of Directors. These documents must be presented, approved and signed in April of each year. Final submission to WCSD and NDE is due on May 1st of each year.
ANNUAL FINANCIAL PROTOCOLS: Each year the Interim Financial Analyst and the Administrator shall review the financial protocols of the organization at the end of the fiscal year. Adjustments will be recommended for Board approval at their first meeting of the school year (August). These changes will be recorded in the Staff Handbook on an annual basis and reported to WCSD during monitoring. Protocols should include: Bank signatures, authorized signatures, requisitions, purchase orders, reimbursements, handling cash, mileage reimbursement, deposit preparation, and review of bank statements.
BIENNIAL REPORT: Every other year, NDE requests a special report for the upcoming legislature. These are the even numbered years. The report is very similar to the November 15th report.
NOVEMBER 15th REPORT: The Interim Financial Analyst shall prepare the November 15th report in September for approval by the HDMS Board of Directors in October with the Annual Audit. Both should be sent to NDE and WCSD the first week of November.
MONTHLY RESPONSIBILITIES:
BANK RECONCILIATION: The Interim Financial Analyst shall collaborate with Administrative Assistant to reconcile all accounts within the first 10 working days of each month. If there is to be a delay, the Administrator and the Board of Directors should be notified in writing by the 10th day of the month as to why there will be an unavoidable delay.
INVOICES SENT TO ALL ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE: The Financial Analyst shall send an invoice to all parents who owe fees to the school on a monthly basis. Accounts not paid by the end of the fiscal year shall be submitted to the Board of Directors for their resolution of the matter. They will advise us to continue to bill, send to collection or write off.
PAYMENTS TO ALL ACCOUNTS PAYABLE: On or before their due dates, payments shall be submitted to all accounts to which the school is liable. The Interim Financial Analyst shall seek to avoid all late fees and penalties as part of the position responsibility.
FINANCIAL REPORTS: The Interim Financial Analyst shall prepare, prior to the 2nd Thursday of each month, a full financial report of the previous month. This report should include monthly activity, Year-to-Date activity, Projected Actual, and Currently Approved Budget. The Interim Financial Analyst should allow approximately two hours on the 2nd Thursday of each month to review these statements with the Administrator and the Administrative Assistant.
DAILY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Deposits: Deposits should be made regularly so that more than $2,000 should not be kept in the school at any given time. Currently, weekly deposits seem adequate; however, special events and schedules may require more frequent deposits.
According to Financial Protocols, the Interim Financial Analyst shall make arrangements in such a manner as to avoid ever having to count or work with money while alone. This procedure should be annually reviewed and amended as needed in the Financial Protocols. The Interim Financial Analyst shall use bank courier service for deposits and never transported in a private car.
Posting: Ledger postings should be done frequently to keep books up to date and accurate, at least once a week.
Purchasing Requisitions: Staff relies upon the Interim Financial Analyst to supply them with the tools they need to do their job. The Purchasing Requisition orders should be placed with five working days of approval by Administrator.
Supplies: The Interim Financial Analyst should assure that the education, safety, and material needs of the school are organized and ready for the start of each school year.
Correspondence: Positive and proactive communication about the financial relationship of the school to its financial responsibilities, debtors and its creditors is key to creating a spirit of collaboration. The Interim Financial Analyst shall document all correspondence and create opportunities to remedy small situations before they become problems.
Checks and Balances: Bank statements shall be presented unopened to the Administrator. The Interim Financial Analyst may never sign checks for the Administrator. Only the Facility/Security Manager and Board President have this right. Further, deposits of cash should be counted by the Security Manager and Administrative Assistant, never the Interim Financial Analyst. He/she will prepare bank deposit slips only after others have counted money and reported sums. Deposits are to be picked up by bank courier, never transported in a private car.

The position requires an extensive background in public finances. Applicant should understand accounting principles for governmental, non-profit, and day care centers. Experience in finances of schools, especially charter schools, is preferred. Applicant should be bondable.
